Keep the earth below my feet

Today’s the day, kids. The new Mumford & Sons was released. Very considerate of them to put it out on a music monday, yeah?

Stylistically it’s not much of a departure from Sigh No More. The arrangements/instrumentation are a little bit richer, but it feels very much like a continuation of their last album. And I don’t mean that in a negative way, when you have a distinct sound that is yours and people respond to it, why make drastic changes?

What I love most about Mumford & Sons are the lyrics anyway. And Mr. Mumford’s raspy voice.

Keep the earth below my feet
For all my sweat, my blood runs weak
Let me learn from where I’ve been
Keep my eyes to serve, my hands to learn

I took a songwriting course all day on Saturday (more on that tomorrow) and it made me even more passionate about good lyrics, if that was possible. It’s not always easy to say something meaningful in four/eight lines.

But you saw no fault, no cracks in my heart
You knelt beside, my hope torn apart

And did you see them on SNL? Amaze.
